Task # 9

Can You...

Do a turn on the forehand while keeping your horse's inside front foot on a target?

How about a turn on the hindquarters?

Online, Liberty, Freestyle, Finesse?

  1. I did a turn on the forehand (HQ yield) Online. I used a 2' square piece of trailer matting (I knew I kept those scraps for a reason) and first got her to stand on it. It took quite a bit of doing to get her to move just her hq without picking up that pivot foot. I had to take a close feel on the halter and correct her if she moved that foot. I would shake the rope a little and tap the foot with the stick until it was back on the mat. I was careful to only ask for a step at a time and eventually got almost a full 360° each direction. I learned that if the pivot foot is farther back than the outside foot, she will always move the pivot foot first in order to get her balance right to move the hq. So, in setting it up for success, I made sure that the outside foot was behind before asking the hq to move and it went much smoother. I'm going to stick with this one for a while and get it really good, as this is one of the Freestyle tasks that isn't so great for us.
