Task # 16

Can You...

Go sideways from Zone 5 with only one line?

  1. This is something I've been doing as a warmup for riding, because it really makes her think. It also tests some unusual combinations of games and zones, which is always good.

I do it like this: if I'm going sideways to the right, I stand in zone 5 with my line on the right side of her body. I lead the line (porcupine game style) to the RIGHT to move the front end. I use my stick (driving game) on the LEFT side of zone 4 to move the hind end. So, she's paying attention to me in zone 5, talking to the right side of zone 1 and the left side of zone 4, all at the same time. It's really great - sometimes I feel like I can see the smoke coming out of her ears as she thinks and figures it all out.

You can also go sideways to the right by having the rope on the left side of her body and using the rope as a porcupine against her zone 3 and zone 4, while driving zone 1 and 2 with the savvy string. I think my way looks more graceful and it's easier for me - and I think she gets less confused. This is how I go sideways with two lines, though, but without the SS at zone 1 and 2. I use porcupine pressure from the right side line for that instead.

I love that we can have so many options!

  2. This past weekend I got some GREAT beautiful, floaty, sideways BOTH DIRECTIONS from zone 5 with one line. After ages of struggling with SW, it was super. If I do my SW from Z5 or Z1 it's super, from Z3 it is full of brace. Hmmm...how interesting!
